Restaurant Menu Design Template: From Printed to Digital
When a restaurant moves from a printed menu to a digital one, the temptation is to copy the PDF. Resist it. A digital menu can do things paper cannot: switch language, filter for allergies, offer sizes and extras, and change mid-service. Designing for that from the start gives guests a better menu and gives you a better-performing one.
1. Structure: groups, categories, dishes
Start with two or three groups (for example Food, Drinks, Desserts), then categories within each (Starters, Mains, Grill). Keep categories to a handful per group. Guests browse by tapping, not scrolling a long page, so fewer, clearer categories win.

2. Each dish carries five things
- A name guests will recognise, in your main language
- One honest sentence that makes it appealing (AI generate can draft it)
- A photo, where you have a good one
- Tags and allergens: Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free, Spicy, Halal, plus allergens
- Price, sizes and add-ons
3. Options instead of duplicates
Printed menus often list "Salad" and "Salad with chicken" separately. On a digital menu, make it one dish with an add-on group. Sizes, sauces and extras belong on the dish, each with its own price.
4. Pairings and set menus
Decide which add-ons you want suggested with your best sellers, and build one or two set menus for groups. These do the upselling quietly. Combos, pairings and add-ons.
5. Look and feel
Pick a theme that matches the room, then approve which themes guests may switch to. Add your logo, tagline, hours and highlights to the landing page. Theme library.
6. Languages
Switch on the languages your guests read and let Auto-translate fill them, then review your signature dishes. If your team works in another language, set a staff language too.
7. Keep it alive
Use availability hours for breakfast and lunch, 86 sold-out dishes in one tap, and review the menu every season.

The checklist
- Groups and a short list of categories
- A sentence, tags and allergens for every dish
- Sizes and extras as options, not duplicate dishes
- Pairings on best sellers, and at least one set menu
- Theme chosen, landing page filled in
- Languages switched on and reviewed
- Hours set on time-limited categories
